National Park Service to Discuss Kīpahulu Plan, Oct. 15October 11, 2018, 1:17 PM HST · Updated October 11, 1:33 PM 0 Comments
Haleakalā National Park is developing a comprehensive plan for the lands under National Park Service management in the Kīpahulu District.
The public is invited to a meeting to learn about actions proposed in the recently released Kīpahulu Comprehensive Plan and Environmental Assessment.
The meeting will take place on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Kīpahulu District Visitor Center.
The purpose of the Kīpahulu Comprehensive Plan (KCP) is to balance recreational access and visitor facilities with protection of the park’s important natural and cultural resources. The renewed planning process will examine current and new visitor opportunities and will outline long-term management strategies.
The purpose of the KCP is to improve visitor access to and enjoyment of the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park while reducing visitor-caused impacts to the park’s resources; to improve safety; and to ensure adequate operational capacity and facilities given the area’s remote location.
The plan provides guidance on improvements to areas including the visitor center, trails, campground, as well as improvements to supporting National Park Service operational facilities such as the maintenance area buildings, fee station, staff housing, and staff offices.
The KCP/EA will be available for review online through Oct. 31, 2018. Hard copies are also be available to review at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center and the Kīpahulu Visitor Center.
The public is invited to view the KCP/EA and submit their comments related to the completed plan.
