Maui Police Chase Ends in Gunfire, Fugitive Dies

A fugitive was shot and killed following a police chase on Maui that ended in gunfire at the intersection of Kaohu and South Market Street on Sunday morning.

Kaulana “Toji” Reinhardt, 26, died after transport to the hospital after the exchange of gunfire with police.

Police say Reinhardt was wanted for numerous outstanding arrest warrants, including one for first degree attempted murder, with bail set at $1 million.

Sunday’s pursuit started at around 10:35 a.m., when officers observed Reinhardt operating a stolen red Toyota Tacoma. According to police reports, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but say Reinhardt refused to stop and the pursuit ensued.

The chase ended in Wailuku when two officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, however Reinhardt allegedly pulled out a handgun and shots were exchanged.

When Reinhardt was hit, officers administered CPR and applied an AED until medical personnel arrived. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

One officer sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

The officers involved had three and 15 years of experience, respectively. Both have been placed on Administrative Leave, which is standard procedure.

The investigation is on-going.

Reinhardt was also the subject of a police pursuit in 2015 and a Crime Stoppers bulletin related to a Kahului burglary incident. Last week, Maui police and Maui Crime Stoppers had issued advisories seeking help in locating Reinhardt, saying he was wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants.

On Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018 at about 10:35 a.m., officers observed a stolen red Toyota Tacoma being driven by Kaulana “Toji” Reinhardt. Reinhardt was wanted for numerous outstanding arrest warrants to include one for Attempted Murder in the First Degree with a bail set at $1 million.

Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the truck but say Reinhardt refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit continued and ended on Kaohu Street at Market Street in Wailuku. As two officers attempted to apprehend Reinhardt, he allegedly pulled out a handgun. Police say shots were exchanged and Reinhardt was hit.

Police temporarily closed off a portion of South Market Street and Kaohu Street to conduct the investigation.

Maui Police are investigating a shooting at the South Market Street and Kaohu Street intersection in Wailuku.

Maui police have closed the area until further notice while they conduct an investigation.

Sources tell Maui Now that an injured individual died after transport to the hospital, however we have yet to receive any confirmation from Police.

Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto called the incident an “officer involved shooting” and said there were no police injuries to report at this time.

Police declined to comment on the individual involved.
