Lihikai Elementary Students Encourage Motorists to ‘Drive Aloha’

Students at Lihikai Elementary School are speaking up to encourage safe driving.

This week, the school’s students and teachers will be teaming up with DTRIC Insurance for a “Drive Aloha” sign-waving event on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The “Drive Aloha” campaign aims to discourage bad commuting habits, such as using a cell phone while driving, running a red light, jaywalking, speeding, and cutting off other drivers.

“Traffic collisions and pedestrian accidents are up from last year and we want to help reverse that trend through our Drive Aloha campaign,” DTRIC Insurance president Michele Saito said in a press release.

“We all have a part in creating safer roadways across the islands, so it’s inspiring to have Maui’s keiki involved in our efforts to have everyone share the roads, be friendlier and be more aware of their surroundings, whether they’re driving, walking or riding a bike.”

The sign-waving will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. in front of the Lihikai campus.

Baldwin High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club, Maui County staff and the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Section will also participate in the traffic safety campaign.
