An emergency project to remove loose, unstable rocks above Milepost 8.1 on Maui’s Kahekili Highway is scheduled for Jan. 9 to 11, 2021, and will make the roadway impassable to motorists during the day while work is ongoing, the Department of Public Works announced.

Barricades have been set out at the site to alert motorists of the hazard area.

Work is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting Saturday, Jan. 9, and continuing to Monday, Jan. 11, but the work may be extended, if necessary.

Project contractor Prometheus Construction will use hand tools such as pry bars to remove unstable rock material along the face of a slope above the roadway. Rocks will be cleared and removed.

Motorists will not be able to pass through the section of roadway during the day while work is ongoing.
