Maui Unemployment Rate Sees Modest Rise From Last Year
The unemployment rate for the island of Maui was 2.7% in March, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. While the islandʻs unemployment rate for March decreased slightly from 2.9% the month before, the rate did rise from 2.1% a year ago.
The unemployment rate for Maui County in March was 2.8%, compared to 2.9% the month before, and 2.2% from March of last year. According to the department, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the entire state in March was also 2.8%, compared to 2.7% in February.
Statewide, 18,650 residents were unemployed in March. Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.8% in March, the same as in February. Initial claims increased by about 3%, while weeks claims decreased by 6% percent for unemployment benefits compared to one year ago. Over the month, initial claims declined 2%, while weeks claims decreased by about 3%.
These unemployment rate figures are seasonally adjusted in accordance with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics methodology. The not seasonally adjusted rate for the state was 2.8% in March, compared to the revised rate of 2.8% in February.
