UPDATE: Kahului Shooting Involved Homeless Altercation

Maui Now has obtained further details regarding a shooting that occurred early this morning near Hoʻohana Street in Kahului.
Maui Now has learned that the incident involved an altercation between two homeless males. The suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm during the altercation and shot the victim, according to police.
Police say other members of the homeless community then subdued the suspect and held him in custody until police arrived on scene.
Both male individuals (the suspect and the victim) were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the altercation. Police say the male suspect was injured while being subdued by other homeless individuals in the area.
The incident was reported at 4:24 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019. At 8 a.m., Hoʻohana Street remained closed between Jack in The Box and Kalepa Place while police continue their investigation.
Maui police have classified the incident as an attempted murder case.

Maui police are conducting an investigation into a shooting reported early this morning in Kahului near the back of the old Safeway store at Hoʻohana Street. The incident was reported at around 4:30 a.m.
Authorities on scene say this was not a fatal incident. On scene, contents of a shopping cart were strewn in the middle of Hoʻohana Street near the back of the old Kahului Safeway store. The road was cordoned off as well as a portion of the parking lot fronting the old store.
Maui police issued a traffic alert shortly after 8 a.m. saying Hoʻohana Street is closed between Jack in The Box and Kalepa Place while detectives continue to investigate an early morning shooting. Motorists are advised to make the appropriate adjustments to traffic plans.
