Weekend Roundup: Obon, “Chicago,” and A Keiki Jam Fest

This weekend is full of music as Obon season hits Pa’ia, and “Chicago,” the musical begins showing at I’ao Theatre. Also, fundraising for the keikis couldn’t be more fun, with a Keiki Jam Fest at Ke’anae. These activities are bound to be memory-worthy, family friendly, and at the jam fest, “ono” as well.

Friday July 8, at 7:30 p.m., the I’ao Theatre in Wailuku will be filled with singing, dancing, and drama as “Chicago,” the musical comes to the stage. This show is running until the end of the month. The last show is July 30; so don’t worry if you can’t attend tonight. Opening night is usually fraught with first night mishaps and timing issues anyway. Pa’ia Mantokuji Mission Obon Festival will take place Friday July 8. Services begin at 6:00 p.m. and dancing starts at 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. This mission is located at 5636 Hana Highway.

On Saturday July 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Ke’anae will be a playground for the keiki’s and the kid in every adult, as a fundraising event becomes boisterous fun. Proceeds from the event will go toward creating a Hawaiian Culture Focused Charter School from the old Ke’anae School.

There will be bouncy castles, live music, craft and food booths, horse and train rides, face painting, live and silent auction, and more. Go to the Ke’anae Peninsula Park, Mile 16 marker on Hana Highway. It’s free. Call 808-281-7201 for more details.
