Thanks to Makawao Merchants, the Maui Police Department, Maui Behavioral Health Resources and volunteers, International Overdose Awareness Day was observed Aug. 1-31 on Maui to bring attention to the message that overdose death is preventable.

Makawao merchants have hung purple lights for the first observance of International Overdose Awareness Day on Maui.

“We forget that addiction is a disease and affects the whole family, especially children. Since my son died of an accidental opioid overdose over two years ago, I’ve been involved in the recovery world helping families mourn, remember their loved ones and get active,” said Vincent.
