Maui Council explores ways to reduce alarming rate of ocean drownings
Maui County faces a disproportionately high rate of ocean drowning fatalities, driven largely by the high number of visitors lured by the ocean’s beauty but unprepared for its hidden dangers.
33 pass MIL Surf Coaches Certification Clinic
The 12th annual Maui Interscholastic League Surf Coaches Certification Clinic had a record number of participants. Thirty-three coaches passed the clinic after completing an open ocean swim, and a program that included ocean risk assessment, ocean rescue, lifesaving techniques, CPR and first aid.
Eight Ocean Safety Officers graduate on Maui with 5th Recruit Class
Eight ocean safety recruits graduated from the Maui Department of Fire & Public Safety, Ocean Safety Bureau’s 5th Recruit Class. Congratulations to: Liane Mickey, Haley Kalama, Leyla Anderson, Ginger Prados, Anthony Cappadona, Tristan Kasprzycki, Ozzie Clarke and Alex King.
Four Maui recruits graduate as part of the Ocean Safety Bureau’s 4th Recruit Class
Graduating Ocean Safety Officers are: Maluhia Scott, Bryceen Silva, Brody Santiago, and Rachel Hillen. They will be joining the ranks of the Ocean Safety Bureau and will be assigned to current lifeguarded beaches throughout Maui County.
