Maui’s Unemployment Rate at 7.4% in June

The Hawai‘i State Department of Labor & Industrial Relations today announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Maui in June 2012 was 7.4%, or a one percentage point decrease from one year ago.

For Hawaii, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June was 6.4%, a 0.3 percentage point decrease from 6.7% compared to a year ago.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.2%, the same as in May 2012 and almost 1% from a year ago June 2011.

Statewide, there were 607,800 employed and 41,500 unemployed in June, for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 649,350. Initial claims in Hawaii were down 6.1% and weeks claimed were down by 7.8% compared to one year ago. Initial claims rose by 4.2% and weeks claimed grew by 1.7% in June compared to May.

Seasonally adjusted figures factor in the seasonal fluctuations in the number of employed and unemployed persons reflect hiring (and layoffs) patterns that accompany regular events such as the winter holiday season and the summer vacation season.
