Lahainaluna Girls Basketball Team Advances to Play Maryknoll in Semifinal Tonight
The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team defeated Mililani 77-38 in the OC16 Division I State Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 at the Kalani Gym in Honolulu. The #2 Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team now advances to play #3 Maryknoll tonight at 7 p.m. at Moanalua High School on Oʻahu.
Lahainaluna is second seeded and their participation marks their 15th straight appearance (25th overall) at the state championships. Lahainaluna won the girls title under head coach Todd Rickard in 2010.
The OC16/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships tipped off on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and is set to conclude on Friday, Feb. 12 during a final championship game at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Top seeded defending state champ Konawaena makes their 15th-straight appearance (18 overall) at this year’s event. The team has won six titles under head coach Bobbie Awa.
MIL runner-up Kamehameha-Maui is making its grand entrance into girls basketball state tournament, its first appearance in either division, while ILH runner up Punahou holds the record for the most state tournament appearances (28) and state titles (11).
The Division II tournament, hosted on the Big Island by Kea’au and Waiakea High Schools, began onWednesday, Feb. 10, featuring the home favorite, #2 KS-Hawaiʻi. The Warriors are the most decorated team in Division II history with four state titles and four runner-up trophies, making this their 12th straight appearance in the 13 years of the tourney.
Division II top seed and last year’s state runner up, Hawaiʻi Baptist, is making its eight straight appearance, ninth overall.
