Seawall Protest at Olowalu
A protest is planned today at the site of a shoreline hardening project just north of Olowalu near mile 15.9 of the Honoapiʻilani Highway.
Albert Perez, executive director for the Maui Tomorrow Foundation, Inc. said the project calls for a 900 foot long boulder revetment up to 40 feet offshore with construction scheduled to start at 7 a.m.
The organization is among those that are opposed to the project.
Those opposed to the project say they want the Department of Transportation to move the road mauka calling the project a “temporary fix” that they argue will destroy the beach, limit access, threaten the coral reef, and create unsafe road conditions that allow the road to get drenched with saltwater when the surf comes up.
Additional sign waving demonstrations were held in the week leading up to today’s construction start.
