KCA Features Discussion on Maui Politics, Educational Entertainment

Educational entertainment and local politics will be the main topics at the Kula Community Association’s meeting set to start at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015) at the Kula Community Center.

KCA Board member Vinnie Linares will be performing selective scenes from the play, Father Damien, a play he has performed since 2000 in Hawaiʻi, on the mainland, and in Europe.

Linares will use a new wrinkle/approach in presenting the play. Between scenes, as himself or as the character Damien, he will conduct a discussion, relating the scenes to important social-cultural, historic events of that time.

In shorter scenes, rather than in two long acts, it will allow the audience to make direct connections to the play, Damien. Scenes will highlight Damien’s struggle with his faith and social-civic responsibility, some graphic descriptions of the Kalaupapa settlement and its patients, and of the political events swirling around his tenure.

Dale Bonar will also be on hand to discuss the Maui County Council’s new effort to examine the County’s governance. He will explore ideas on if the County can operate more effectively and efficiently with a different structure. A council appointed special committee could potentially lead to a recommendation to amend the County Charter, a question that could land on the November 2016 election ballot.

2016 KCA officers and board members will also be elected at this general meeting.
