Maui site of Guinness World Record swimming attempt
The Kihei Aquatic Center is listed as one of more than 175 sites around the world attempting to set a Guinness World Record by holding a simultaneous swimming lesson.
The Kihei event will start at 4 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, with registration begining at 3 a.m.
Participants of all ages are welcome, but each must be registered to take part in the world record attempt. There is no cost for the lesson, however, all participants must be registered, in-position and ready to begin the lesson prior to the official start time.
Other sites joining the simultaneous attempt stretch from Zambia, Lebanon and Dubai to Europe, Canada, the Philippines, South Korea and throughout the United States.
The world record attempt is part of an effort by a coalition of water safety and training organizations to draw attention to the message that swimming lessons save lives.
The Maui swimming lesson is coordinated by Fran Yamamoto of the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Division.
