LETTERS: Complaints About Prices on Maui
By Toni Marie Davis, Makawao
Wow convenience is expensive!
Recently I purchased a small loaf of bread, 2 regular sized russet potatoes and 1/2 dozen eggs (actually 7) from Rodeo General in my quaint little town of Makawao.
Didn’t want to drive, I live on the Haiku side of Makawao a 7 minute walk into town. Love the idea of a pedestrian community, supporting locally owned business, green, sustainable, healthy & evidently a pain in the pocket book. The prices reflected those of a hotel lobby sundry store. For these 3 items the total was $17.76! Really?
Later I went to Foodland and purchased 18 eggs, a loaf of bread & 5lbs of potatoes. The cost (I laughed out loud when I saw it) was only $15.60!
So here’s the break down:
Rodeo General Foodland
7 eggs (1/2 dozen) 18 eggs (nearly 3 times as much)
loaf of bread loaf of bread
2 medium russets 5lb bag of russet potatoes (nearly 4 times as much)
Total cost: $17.76 $15.60
That’s just sad. 🙁

If you haven’t had to rent a rental car on Maui lately you’re in for a shock.
The rates are more akin to a large monthly payment for a $65,000 Lexus.
In November last year and in January this year the rate for just a compact was and is in excess of $500 for a mere 10 days in paradise. The rate for a standard ride is hovering around the $600 figure and OMG if you wanted a SUV, Mini Van or premium car: $900 and up to $2000 for just 10 days.
Compared to the rates in 2011 a compact was $260 tops and a Cadillac was $490. ( WTF ) The rental car companies are killing the tourists at the onset of any vacation they had hoped to have on Maui.
This needs to be looked into as it is not encouraging tourism on Maui!
Thanks for digging into this issue
