Lower Kula Water System Improvements to Impact Traffic
By Wendy Osher
Residents of Maui’s Kula Kai and Kula Mala subdivisions are advised of water systems improvements that will impact traffic in the area.
Rojac Construction began improvements on Monday, Sept. 15, and will continue work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Although work will occur entirely on ranch lands, project managers say there will be increased large vehicle traffic due to construction through Ka Drive.
Department of Hawaiian Home Lands project manager Stewart Matsunaga said the project is slated for completion by Feb. 28, 2015, but it could be completed earlier depending on grading work at the site.
The project will include a bypass waterline for Phase VI of the pumping facility.
Contractors are accessing the construction site through the Haleakalā Ranch gate located at the top of Ka Drive.
Project managers say construction vehicles will proceed from Kula Highway to ʻŌmaʻopio Road, Lower Kula Road, and onto Ka Drive to the Haleakalā Ranch gate.
Initially, trucks delivered approximately eight loads of equipment and pipe to the work site.
“This work should now be nearly completed and the heavy equipment should not be on the neighborhood roads again until the equipment is removed upon project completion,” project managers said.
As part of the work, the contractor will provide dust mitigation to the area in an effort to minimize impact to the neighborhood.
Motorists are advised to proceed with caution through the area.
