Election results. Final Printout 8.14.16.

FINAL SUMMARY REPORT:  This printout was released at around 1:04 a.m. on 11.09.16 and was produced at 12:46 a.m. 11.09.16.

In a come-from-behind victory, Aloha ʻāina candidate Alika Atay won the race for the Wailuku Council seat after trailing the entire night by a slim margin.

In the end just 808 votes separated the Atay and former councilmember Dain Kane, when the final results were released just after 1 a.m. and an additional 3,510 votes were located.

Maui also has a new South Maui councilmember. Kelly King defeated incumbent Don Couch; and political newcomer Yuki Lei Sugimura will fill the vacancy left by Gladys Baisa who reached her term limit.  In both races—for South and Upcountry Maui, an estimated 1,052 votes separated the winning candidate from their opponent.

In other races, incumbents held on to solid leads with Bob Carroll holding nearly 48% of the vote in East Maui, 6,153 votes ahead of his challenger Shane Sinenci.  In West Maui, incumbent Elle Cochran had nearly 60% of the vote with 19,394 more votes than her challenger Ernest Balinbin. Other incumbents–Mike White (Makawao), Stacy Helm Crivello (Molokaʻi), Don Guzman (Kahului) and Riki Hokama (Lānaʻi)–all held significant leads over their challengers.

Election results. 4th printout (11:48 p.m. 8.13.16)

Election results. 4th printout (11:45 p.m. 11.08.16)

Fourth Printout:  This printout was released at around 11:45 p.m. and was produced at 11:36 p.m. 11.08.16. The fourth printout is a summary report and is not considered the certified final report.  The final report is usually released overnight or into the early morning hours as elections officials finalize tallies from across the state.

The fourth printout indicates that Dain Kane (21,552) remains ahead of aloha ʻāina candidate Alika Atay (21,295), widening his lead to 257 votes in one of the closest races of the evening.

If the results hold firm into the final tally, Maui County could have a new councilmember representing the South Maui district.  Kelly King (21,704) was a slim 131 votes ahead of incumbent Don Couch (21,573) according to the fourth printout, which was issued shortly before midnight.

In Upcountry Maui, 1,774 votes separated political newcomers Yuki Lei Sugimura (22,160) and Napua Greig-Nakasone according to the fourth summary printout.

In other races, incumbents appeared to have solid leads with Bob Carroll holding 48% of the vote in East Maui, 6,713 votes ahead of his challenger Shane Sinenci.  In West Maui, incumbent Elle Cochran had nearly 60% of the vote with 17,561 more votes than her challenger Ernest Balinbin. Other incumbents–Mike White (Makawao), Stacy Helm Crivello (Molokaʻi), Don Guzman (Kahului) and Riki Hokama (Lānaʻi)–all held significant leads over their challengers.

In the state legislature, incumbents for four of Maui’s House seats (Speaker Joe Souki, Rep. Angus McKelvey, Rep. Kaniela Ing and Rep. Lynn Decoite) enjoyed comfortable leads over their challengers, with all securing more than 66% of the vote in their respective races.

Presidential Race:

In the presidential race, NBC News reports that Donald Trump has 56,889,128 votes and 248 electoral votes; and Hillary Clinton has 55,865,063 votes and 218 electoral votes as of 2 a.m. ET.  The electoral projections differ by news organization and Clinton’s campaign has indicated that they will be going to sleep for the night.  FOX News and The Honolulu Star-Advertiser both reported that Trump has won the presidency.  Vice President elect Michael Pence gave a brief address (2:45 a.m. ET) at the Trump Election Night Headquarters and introduced Trump.

President-elect Donald Trump spoke at this headquarters (at 2:48 a.m. ET) amid chants of “USA, USA.” Trump said he received a call from Secretary Clinton, “congratulating us” on the victory and he in turn congratulated her on “on a hard-fought campaign.”

Trump said he owes a “major debt of gratitude for her service to our country.”

“Now it’s time for Americans to bind the wounds of division.  We have to get together.  To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across the nation, it is time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me,” said Trump.

“For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country,” he said.

“Ours was not a campaign, but rather a great movement that was made of millions of Americans who want a better brighter future for themselves and our country.”  He further stated that he would be working to re-tap the American Dream.

He closed his 15 minute address by thanking his parents and family, as well as former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Senator Jeff Sessions, Dr. Ben Carson and others who were involved in his campaign. He also concluded by saying, “I love this country.”

The polls closed at 6 p.m., but many polling places remained open past their closing time due to voters still in line.

In the primary election, the first printout was produced at 6:33 p.m. and was released at 7:15 p.m.

Elections officials are projecting printouts to be released at around 8:30, 10 and 11:30 p.m. according to Hawaiʻi News Now.
