UPDATE: Double Fatality on Pi‘ilani Highway

Two Kīhei residents were fatally injured in a traffic accident on the Piʻilani Highway at the Welakahao intersection in South Maui on Friday afternoon, July 20, 2018.
The accident was reported at 1:16 p.m. and involved a motorcyclist with a passenger and a Caravan with two occupants inside.
Police say the collision occurred as a black 2003 Independence motorcycle, traveling south on Piʻilani Highway, collided into a gold 2003 Chrysler Caravan, failing to yield while making a left turn onto Piʻilani Highway from East Welakahao Road.
The operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and was later identified as William Kerr Chapman, 42, of Kīhei. The passenger of the motorcycle was also not wearing a helmet sustained critical life-threatening injuries. She was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.
The operator of the Chrysler Caravan was wearing her seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as Tina Louise Hanback, 48, of Kīhei. The front seat passenger of the Chrysler Caravan was not wearing his seatbelt and sustained injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This is Maui County’s 9th traffic fatality for 2018, compared to four at the same time last year.
***UPDATE: 4:50 p.m. 7.20.18****
The Piʻilani Highway is now OPEN. It was closed for more than three hours as police conducted an investigation into a traffic accident reported at around 1:30 p.m. on the highway near the Welakahao Road intersection. As of 4:50 p.m., traffic was still backed up. It will take some time for traffic to resume its normal flow. Motorists are asked to drive with caution and exercise patience.

Due to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Piʻilani Highway and Welakahao Road the highway is closed in both directions between Līpoa Parkway and Kanani Road. Traffic is being re-routed at Kanani and Līpoa as of 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018. Motorists can expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes.
