26th Annual Hawai‘i Science Bowl Accepting Entries
Schools from across the state are invited to register and compete in next year’s 26th Annual Hawai‘i Science Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Honolulu Community College.
Registration for the Hawai‘i Regional Science Bowl will open at 6 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2018 online at http:///hawaiisciencebowl.pcatt.org. The deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 16, 2018.
Each team will consist of four students, an alternate, and at least one coach.
During the event, statewide high school teams vie for the championship title for an opportunity to represent their school and Hawai’i in the National Science Bowl® competition held April 25 – April 29, 2019 in Washington, D.C. More than 14,000 students compete at the various regional events which lead up to the National Science Bowl® each year.
Teams will face-off in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to the TV game show Jeopardy as they are quizzed on a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) topics.
The winning team and its coach will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent Hawai‘i in the National Science Bowl®, America’s largest and most prestigious science competition for high school students.
The second-place Hawai‘i Science Bowl team will win an educational trip to study science-based sites within the state. Past trips have included visits to astronomical and volcanic observatories and other high-tech installations.
The top eight teams in the Hawai’i Science Bowl will also win cash prizes ranging in $100 to $500 for their school’s math or science department.
“Every year we look forward to engaging with different schools and students from across the state for this intense yet friendly STEM competition,” said Steve Golden, president of the Hawai’i Science Bowl executive committee. “It’s always amazing to see year after year all the hard work and dedication of the students and their coaches, ultimately providing the students the opportunity to develop valuable life skills that contributes to their overall development and long-term success.”
Beginning in 1994, the Hawai’i Science Bowl has encouraged student involvement in math and science activities with the hope of transforming today’s brightest young minds into tomorrow’s scientific leaders.
More than 2,200 students from over 50 high schools across the state have participated in the Hawai’i Science Bowl with alumni including numerous Presidential Scholars and graduates from some of the nation’s most highly respected educational institutions including MIT, Harvard, California Institute of Technology, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon.
