Kīhei Beach Cleanup Clears Over Hundred Pounds of Trash

Scores of volunteers gathered at Po’olenalena Beach park in Kīhei earlier today to help clean the coastline. 

Hawaiian Paddle Sports organized the effort for International Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual world-wide effort that rallies nearly 12 million volunteers to remove over 220 million pounds of trash from waterways and beaches.

According to event organizers, today’s cleanup in Kīhei cleared about 138.2 pounds of trash in just over two hours. 

Over 40 volunteers helped gather thousands of pieces of trash, including 782 cigarette butts, 335 food wrappers, and 145 paper bags.

Several other cleanups were scheduled throughout the island today.
