Maui police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian reported overnight on the Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui.

The incident was reported at 11:49 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019 on the Honoapiʻilani Highway, 0.3 miles north of Kai Hele Kū Street in Lahaina.

Police tell Maui Now that a Ford Focus vehicle was traveling north-bound on the highway when it collided into a pedestrian that was crossing the road.  Authorities say the pedestrian was not
within a crosswalk.

“Following the collision, the operator of the Ford vehicle then fled the area failing to render aid or provide any information as required by law,” police said.

Police say the pedestrian died at the scene. He has since been positively identified by police following notification of next of kin, as Luke Hall, 37.  Police say he has no local address.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the responsible vehicle, described as a Ford Focus (between model years 2004-2007) and unknown color.  Police say the vehicle would have damages to the front bumper and hood area. Damages to this vehicle’s windshield are also possible.

Anyone with information regarding a vehicle matching this description please contact Officer Aaron Williams with the MPD Vehicle Homicide Unit at 244-6365 or Police dispatch at 244-6400.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

This is the 21st traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year, compared to 16 at the same time last year.
