Bill to Tow Drunken Drivers Passes First Reading

A new bill that would allow police to tow the vehicles of drunken drivers upon arrest passed its first reading before the Maui County Council on Thursday.

The bill would also require the owner of the vehicle to pay the cost of towing.

Additionally, drivers would get towed for:

  • Driving without a license
  • Driving while license is suspended or revoked
  • Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant
  • Habitually operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant
  • Operating a vehicle after license and privilege has been suspended or revoked for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant
  • Operating a vehicle after consuming a measurable amount of alcohol, if under the age of twenty-one
  • Fraudulent use of plates, tags, or emblems

The Maui Police Department, the County Prosecutorʻs Office, and the councilʻs Multimodal Transportation Committee support the bill.

The bill is now slated for a second and final reading on Dec. 20.
