Maui Hawaiʻi History Day Fair, Feb. 22

The Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities (HIHumanities) will host the Maui Hawaiʻi History Day Fair, a competition featuring student work from Baldwin High School, Maui High School, Sacred Hearts School and St. Anthony High School.

National History Day is a rigorous student-centered critical thinking program, where students are challenged beyond textbooks and standardized tests to conduct deep historical research, form their own questions and interpretations, and formally present their work in the form of essay, display board, website, documentary, or performance.

HIHumanities runs the state affiliate, Hawai‘i History Day, on Maui, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i Island. Students are judged by representatives from Maui College, libraries, museums, and others.

Winners will be flown to O‘ahu to compete against youth from five islands in the State History Day Fair. State winners compete with youth across the US and world at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland.

Project topics will include, “Soichi Sakamoto and the Three-Year Swim Club: From Plantation Workers to Olympic Swimmers” and “Jackie Robinson Breaks The Color Barrier.”

Educators interested in the Hawai‘i History Day program and the public are welcome to attend to view these exciting Maui projects.

Students will also be competing for special community-sponsored awards. Topics include: best project focusing on agriculture, best project focusing on immigration, and more.

The Maui Historical Society will be hosting a lunchtime activity that includes an interactive game about the history of Hale Hō`ike`ike at the Bailey House.

Maui Hawai’i History Day Fair is supported by the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, the Wurst Family Foundation, and Bendon Family Foundation.

The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College.
