Maui Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash on North Kīhei Road
A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash on North Kīhei Road early Tuesday morning.
Police have since identified the motorcyclist as 36-year-old Myles Basquez of Kīhei.
According to police reports, Basquez was operating a 2000 Honda, model CBR1000RR motorcycle and was traveling northwest on North Kīhei Road when he collided into a 2007 Ford Sport Trac pickup truck.
A preliminary investigation reveals the operator of the Ford was also traveling northwest when he slowed and attempted to make a legal left turn into the area of the canoe hale nearby.
Police say the motorcycle operator, who was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed, collided into the driver side of the Ford.
As a result of the collision, Basquez was ejected onto the roadway and died at the scene. The operator of the Ford, a 63-year-old Kīhei man, did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.
The incident was reported at 5:56 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021 on North Kīhei Road about 0.1 miles SE of Mile 3.
Police say the motorcyclist was wearing at helmet at the time of the crash. The operator of the Ford was wearing his seatbelt, but airbags in the vehicle did not deploy.
Police say speed is suspected as a factor in the crash. The involvement of alcohol and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
This was the 12th traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year as compared to six at the same time last year.
