Mālama Maui Nui Hosts its Monthly Recycling Event in Haʻikū May 3
By Maui Now Staff
Mālama Maui Nui will hold its monthly Mālama ‘Āina Recycling Event at the Haʻikū Community Center parking lot on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The event offers residents the opportunity drop off recyclable household items including old appliances, cell phones, scrap metal, and batteries at one convenient location.
The items will then be either reused, recycled, or separated for proper disposal by Mālama Maui Nui and its partner organizations.
Event organizers say the Mālama ‘Āina recycling event is part of a monthly series that travels to different locations within Maui County each month in an effort to alleviate pressure on county landfills.
Organizers say items that will be accepted include: scrap metal, bicycles, appliances, lawn mowers, cooking oil, cellular phones, household batteries, vehicle batteries, printers, ink cartridges, electronics, computers, laptops, televisions, HI-5 recyclables, telephone books, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, used eye glasses, hearing aids, books, DVDs, clothing, non HI-5 glass, plastic, aluminum recyclables, and other household items. Regular-sized or smaller vehicle tires will also be accepted, with the organization suggesting a $5 donation for the service.
While drop off of items is done as a service to the public, residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for Feed My Sheep, a mobile food distribution program for Maui families and individuals in need.
Items that will not accepted include: motor oil, hazardous fluids, green waste, furniture, propane tanks, paint, and vehicles. Paper shredding will also not be available.
Partners for this month’s Mālama ‘Āina event include the Haʻikū Community Center, Hammerhead Metals, Maui Friends of the Library, The Lions Club, Intrade Corporation, ARC of Maui, Savers, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Pacific Biodiesel, Maui Disposal, Aloha Waste, Habitat for Humanity—Maui, Pukalani Superette, and the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management.
