Ask the Mayor: When Will Busy Vevau Street Be Repaired?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Dear Mayor,
Q: Can you tell me if Vevau Street in Kahului is a county street? And if it is, why is it so badly damaged? It’s just terrible. I realize that it is a very short street, but it is well used as it sits between two shopping centers and the library. Please let me know what the plans for Vevau are in the future. Mahalo.
A: The answer is, the county owns part of the Vevau–from Lono Avenue to School Street–and Alexander & Baldwin owns the second half–from School Street to Kane Street. The county had actually paved its portion of the street recently, however A&B’s portion of the street is tied in with mixed-use commercial and residential condominium project they have planned for that area.
From what I understand, once that project gets underway, so will road improvements. Right now there’s been no word as to the timeline of that particular project, so I can’t tell you when those improvements will take place.
