Award-Winning Climate Change Film at The MACC
The Maui Film Festival will present critically acclaimed THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING for one show only on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
This screening will follow the film’s world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the runner-up in Toronto’s prestigious “Documentary Audience Award” competition.
The Hawai’i premiere at The MACC will serve as special fundraiser for three Maui non-profit organizations—the Sierra Club of Maui, the Maui Chapters of the Hawai‘i Farmers Union United and SHAKA Movement—which all work to ensure food security and a robust organic farming community in Maui County, more overall North Shore open space on Maui and protection of open space at Peahi in perpetuity.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING, based on the book of the same name by Naomi Klein and directed by Avi Lewis, provides an epic canvas for this exploration of the greatest challenge of our time. Unlike many works about the climate crisis, this is not a film that tries to scare the audience into action: it aims to empower.
The film was shot in nine countries on five continents over four years. Its extraordinary detail, and the richness and beauty of its cinematography provide a provocative, compelling and accessible view to even the most climate-fatigued viewers.
It looks at the most important issue of our times, while leaving viewers refreshed and inspired, reflecting on the ties between us, the kind of lives we really want and why the climate crisis is at the center of it all.
“People may or may not agree with every action these or other nonprofit organizations whose members and citizen activists work everyday to make Maui, Hawai’i, the nation and the world a better place,” said Festival Director Barry Rivers. “But, at the end of the day, so long as they are exercising their rights non-violently and with respect for others, they are using their constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of speech and protest that are at the very core of the deepest wisdom embedded in any democracy and are driven by the desire to make the world—be it Maui or Earth—a better place for all.”
Admission to THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING is $14 each with the festival’s special “Bring a Friend or Make One in Line at Box Office” two-person pass ($28). Single tickets are $20 each. All ticket prices include additional MACC fees.
