Artists Needed for Hui No’eau’s Wahi Pana Auwahi Exhibition
The Hui No‘eau and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project are collaborating with Mazatl, the Hui’s 2018 Artist in Residence, to bring the forest to the people through an art exhibition titled, Wahi Pana Auwahi.
Auwahi dry forest on southwest Haleakalā is one of the last representatives of a nearly lost and biologically unique Hawaiian forest type. For numerous Hawaiian species, many with great cultural importance, Auwahi appears to be their last stand.
The submission process is currently underway. All juried artists are asked to work in a 10×10(x10″) format. Artists are required to attend at least one hike/restoration trip to the Auwahi Forest and/or an Info Session with Dr. Art Medieros in order for work to be considered for this exhibition.
The work that each artist submits will fit into a time period or “realm” and the gallery will be hung chronologically to visually showcase the history of Auwahi. Realms are as follows:
1. The pre-contact forest
2. The forest as a “toolbox for early Hawaiians”
3. The introduction of invasive species detrimental to the native forest
4. Current conservation efforts to restore the native forest & a vision for the future
The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts will be visiting Wahi Pana Auwahi to consider pieces for purchase for their Art in Public Places program.
Interested artists can visit huinoeau.com for more information and to view the prospectus and application form. Artists are asked to read the prospectus in full.
