Mayor: Maui Could Potentially Receive $66.6 Million in CARES Act Funding

Maui Mayor Victorino said “Maui could potentially receive $66.6 million” in Federal CARES Act funding to assist in COVID-19 response efforts.

“I look forward to the state legislature convening on Monday, May 11, to discuss allocations for the counties from the $1.3 billion in CARES Act funding for Hawaiʻi,” said Mayor Victorino.

“We continue to work closely with state lawmakers to ensure we are fiscally prepared to support the health and safety of our citizens during this time,” he said.

The session is expected to last at least six legislative days and will focus on stabilizing the state budget and budget-related bills in anticipation of a $1 billion shortfall in state revenues.

On Thursday, Representative Angus McKelvey (West Maui, Māʻalea, North Kīhei) said, “By taking swift emergency action to allocate CARES monies to the counties, making much-needed elimination of non-critical items and vacant positions to shore-up the Rainy Day Fund, I believe we can forestall any previously discussed, draconian measures by the Governor while giving people the support they need.”
