Hawai‘i’s largest Junior Lifeguard championship to date returns to Kā‘anapali Beach on Maui on Saturday Aug. 9.  More than 120 of Hawai‘i’s most promising young ocean leaders will gather from across the islands to compete, showcasing their lifesaving skills, ocean knowledge, athleticism and teamwork.

A public aerial fireworks show for the Fourth of July will take place at 8 o’clock tonight (July 4), offshore of the Grand Wailea at 3850 Wailea Alanui Drive in Kīhei. The Grand Wailea has reported that the show will last approximately 15 minutes.

Makai Farm, Harrison Cannon, James McNeil and Jacob Jacinto completed the 12-week training program. Cannon was given the award for the Best Overall Recruit. The “Surf 50” award, created in memory of fallen Ocean Safety Officer Randy Hillen, was given to Jacinto.

Maui Mayor Richard Bissen proclaimed Thursday as Maui Fire Department Centennial Day, recognizing the departmentʻs century of service responding to fires, floods and other emergencies.

The Hawai‘i Community Foundation announced a $2.128 million grant to the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation. The total award amount comprises $1 million from HCF’s Maui Strong Fund and $1.128 million donated by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez. The new trucks will have the ability to drive off-pavement, allowing crews to better reach wildfires early and prevent them from spreading.

The County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety added two new Ocean Safety officers to their force after the graduation of Recruit Class 7.

Maui Land & Pineapple Company announced the recent appointment of Jasen Kaʻimikaua as Land Manager. In this role, he will support the company’s renewed mission to put its 22,000 acres of land to productive use.

Graduating Ocean Safety Officers are: Maluhia Scott, Bryceen Silva, Brody Santiago, and Rachel Hillen. They will be joining the ranks of the Ocean Safety Bureau and will be assigned to current lifeguarded beaches throughout Maui County.

The Maui Fire Department will restart wildland live fire training this morning, Monday, July 11, 2022.

Fire crews on Maui responded to a structure fire at Kahului Elementary School on Friday night, reported shortly before 10 p.m.

An 8-year-old girl was brought to the Makawao fire station by her parents after sustaining partial thickness burns to her back in a fireworks-related incident.

Laureen Perreira, Administrative Services Assistant with the Department of Public Works was named the overall Maui Employee of the Year; the Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety’s Fire Ground Operations Program was named the Overall Maui Team of the Year; and Luz Domingo, the Grant management Program Manager with the Department of Housing and Human Concerns was named the Overall Maui Manager of the Year.

Molokaʻi firefighters responded to five separate brush fires, all around 200 to 300 yards apart, along the Maunaloa Highway at 5:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016.

Hoʻolehua firefighters arrived at 2:22 p.m. and found around a half-acre of brush burning in a dry field off of Maunaloa Highway.

On March 21-25, 2016 between 8 a.m and 5 p.m., the Maui County Department of Fire & Public Safety will be performing a series of “controlled burns” near mile marker 19 of Honoapiʻilani Highway in the Puamana area.

The Department of Fire and Public Safety survey is required as part of the department’s accreditation by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

In all, 500 alarms were installed in 115 homes, including 84 installations on Maui, 27 on Molokaʻi, 4 on Lānaʻi.

The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety will begin installing smoke alarms at high risk homes in October, under the federally funded Smoke Alarm Maui Program.

Maui Firefighters Derrick Chai and Willie Barut were promoted to the rank of Fire Captain. Both will begin their new assignments on June 1, 2011.

The Maui Fire Department announced the appointment of Lee Mainaga as the new Public Information Officer for the Department.
