Hawai‘i Community Foundation awards $1.2M to protect nearshore marine areas
The Hawai‘i Community Foundation announced more than $1.2 million in grants to 18 organizations and programs providing meaningful contributions to the goal of the Holomua Marine Initiative, which focuses on protecting and restoring nearshore marine areas in Hawai‘i through community engagement and co-management. The grantees have programs in Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Island, Moloka‘i, Maui, O‘ahu and statewide.
Mayor Richard Bissen signs $1.263B Maui budget into law
Alongside Maui County Council Chair Alice Lee and Council Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura, Mayor Richard Bissen on Wednesday afternoon signed into law an approximately $1.263 billion Fiscal Year 2025 budget. The document boosts housing for residents, especially those who were displaced after the 2023 August wildfires, supports wildfire recovery and resiliency, bolsters social service programs and delivers core services.
12th Hāna Limu Festival returns to Hāna Bay Beach Park at Kapueokahi
Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea announced that the Hāna Limu Festival returns to Hāna Bay Beach Park at Kapueokahi on July 15, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 12th Hāna Limu Festival returns to its traditional Hāna Bay location for the first time since 2019.
Scott Crawford of Hāna named new Maui Marine Director for The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy, Hawai‘i and Palmyra has selected Scott Crawford of Hāna, Maui as the new Maui Nui Marine Director. Crawford comes to TNC with 30 years’ experience in environmental and community work on Maui.
Six Maui groups to receive $550,000 in grants for nearshore marine management training
The Marine 30×30 Pooled Fund grantees can align their marine management work with Holomua Marine 30×30, but it is not a requirement.
2022 Hāna Limu Festival, Aug. 13
Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea announced the post-pandemic reemergence of the annual Hāna Limu Festival, at a new location this year. The 2022 Limu Festival – Hanana No Nā Limu – takes place on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Coconut Cove, 20 Uwala Drive in Hāna, Maui.
Public Virtual Presentation: 7 Environmental Projects Funded Through Maui CARES
A free public Zoom presentation about seven Maui County environmental projects funded with federal CARES Act aid will be held Jan. 27 at 5:30 pm.
Maui Events Included in OHA Grant Funding

6th Annual Hāna Limu Festival, Nov. 21-22
The 6th Annual Hāna Limu Festival takes place this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21 and 22, in East Maui. The festival is organized by the non-profit group, Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea, to provide a deeper understanding of native limu (seaweed), and to become mindful of the roles the public plays in ensuring ocean resources are available for future generations.
