Imagine an outdoor classroom on the green grassy slope of a volcano, where the teacher is on horseback, and the students are learning about the soil, water and plants around them. This imaginary classroom is real—it comes to life once a year during the “Agriculture in the Classroom” Field Trip, an annual educational event put on by Maui County Farm Bureau.

If you stop by the Haleakalā Creamery booth at Maui AgFest next weekend, don’t be startled if you’re greeted by a goat. Rebecca Woodburn-Rist, owner of Maui’s “Farm to Spoon” goat dairy, will be selling her delicious goat milk caramel sauces and “Goatlato” ice cream with a little help from the herd. 

For the new two-year term, the Maui County Farm Bureau retained eight directors and elected two new directors including Ethan Romanchak and Theresa Thompson. Warren K. Watanabe is the executive director.

Maui County has become the first county in the State of Hawai’i to establish its own Department of Agriculture.

This year’s winners are “Member of the Year,” Heidi Watanabe; “Farm Family of the Year,” the Hegele Family; and Mike Lyons Award, Hawaiian Electric Company.
