#Hui o Waa Kaulua

The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College’s Student ʻOhana for Sustainability (SOS) club is partnering with Maui Huliau Foundation and Hulihia to host its annual Earth Day celebration on the campus Great Lawn and back parking lot on Monday, April 22 from 3 to 6 p.m.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $2.4 million grant to the University of Hawai‘i Maui College for a project called, “‘ĀINA IS: Advancing Informal Native ‘Āina-based Inspirations in STEM.”

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Hawaiian voyaging culture through history, values, protocol, seamanship skills, water safety, navigation and aloha ʻāina (love and care for the land). 

Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua, Maui Historical Society, and Boys & Girls Club of Maui were each awarded a lead grant of $10,000 by the Foundation for their work serving the community.

Hui o Waʻa Kaulua, Maui’s Voyaging Society, announced today that Maui’s Hawaiian voyaging canoe, the Moʻokiha o Piʻilani, has secured a new home with a permanent mooring permit at Mā’alaea Harbor.

The Hawaiʻi House of Representatives welcomed Amy Hanaialiʻi at the State Capitol on Friday as she sang “The Queens Prayer” for Representative Angus McKelvey’s invocation.

Organizers say an estimated 400 people participated in the procession from 525 Front Street to Māla Wharf. The canoe launch this Friday is scheduled in conjunction with the Akua Moon and the 3:53 p.m. highest tide of the month, according to Hui o Waʻa Kaulua.

Prior to the launch, crews will slowly roll the vessel 1.4 miles up Front Street during the early morning hours on July 7.

The long-awaited launch of Maui’s own Polynesian voyaging canoe, the Moʻokiha o Piʻilani, has been set for Friday, July 11, 2014, at Māla Wharf Boat Ramp in West Maui, according to a Hui o Waʻa Kaulua announcement.

The 62-foot double-hulled traditional sailing canoe was weighed as part of a registration process, as the vessel is readied for launch in mid-May.

The long-awaited launch of Maui’s voyaging canoe, the Moʻokiha o Piʻilani will be delayed to mid-May, according to an announcement this week from Hui o Waʻa Kaulua, Maui’s Voyaging Society.
