Prosecutor’s Office Evacuated in Smoke Alarm Incident

Firefighters were dispatched to the County Prosecutor’s Office twice on Wednesday in response to the activation of the building’s smoke alarm.
On both occasions, firefighters found no smoke, but observed a smoky odor in the administrator’s office, authorities said.
An electrician was called, and determined the cause was a burnt out light ballast, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The prosecutor’s office is located in the old court house building in Wailuku, between the county building and the now demolished old Wailuku post office.
The first incident was reported at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3; and the second alarm occurred at 12:09 p.m. All employees were reportedly evacuated during the first incident.
Engine-1 from Wailuku responded to both incidents. Officials say they were assisted by Engine-10 and Hazmat-10 from Kahului during the morning incident. The County’s Public Works Engineer was also called to assist.
