In partnership with Kaunakakai Elementary School teacher Bob Underwood, the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony hosted its Molokai Strings Program, providing workshops for students to receive private lessons from experienced musicians while also learning four songs and performing as a string orchestra.

The program consisted of weekend workshops in which students could receive group and private instruction, of which this was the first opportunity for many students to receive private lessons.

“Molokai has a rich musical history, which connects students to music and builds a community,” said Randy Wong, president of Hawai‘i Youth Symphony. “The Molokai Strings workshop is just the beginning as the program has received tremendous praise from participants and support from donors wishing to create opportunities for young musicians to develop their appreciation for the arts.”

Inspired by the impact that the Molokai Strings workshop had on the Friendly Isle’s students and community, the Youth Symphony received a generous donation of $2,000, which will be utilized to continue the program for Molokai students.
