Haleakalā brush fire burns 2-3 acres off Crater Road
A brush fire that started on Saturday evening off of Crater Road, burned 2-3 acres. Although the fire is fully contained, crews continued mop-up operations today.
The fire was first reported at 5:25 p.m. on July 6, at 10800 Haleakalā Hwy, in the area of Mile 8 along Crater Road.
Crews worked in difficult terrain, assisted by Air 1 making water drops and stopping forward progress of the fire before sundown on Saturday. Crews continued to work overnight on hot spots as heavy equipment was used into the night to secure the perimeter. Crews and Air 1 continued to work on Sunday to extinguish hot spots and improve containment, with the fire 90% contained by Sunday night.
The fire was declared 100% contained Monday, July 8, at 8:30 a.m. Crews will continue to work today to ensure containment holds, to extinguish hot spots and mop up the area, according to department reports.
Responding units included: Engine 13, Engine 10, Tanker 10, Relief Tanker 10, Hazmat 10, Air 1, a battalion chief, a tanker from Alpha Construction and a tanker and heavy equipment from Haleakalā Ranch.
There were no evacuations, damages or injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
