The Hawaiʻi State Legislature on Thursday announced funding decisions for the Act 310, Session Laws of Hawaiʻi 2025 Nonprofit Grants Program, awarding $50 million to support nonprofits impacted by recent federal funding delays and reductions.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi announced the selection of its new president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaiʻi, Edmund “Ed” Chan. Chan’s roots in Hawaiʻi began early in his career. In 2000, after completing his Registered Dietitian training in Boston, he accepted a position as a clinical dietitian for Hale Makua Health Services in Kahului, Maui. Chan also took on roles at the Community Clinic of Maui and served as a consultant dietitian to Maui Youth & Family Services.

Limited choices for obstetrics options on Maui has caused concern among those who continue to care for pregnant women on the island. 

The funding includes $65,500 to Hāna Community Health Center; $65,500 to Molokaʻi ʻOhana Health Care, Inc.; $65,500 to Lānaʻi Community Health Center; and $65,500 to the Community Clinic of Maui, Inc., according to the Health Resources & Services Administration.

Maui earmarks include $23 million for the realignment of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, $6.1 million to Haleakalā National Park, and a host of other federal funds for various projects and improvements.

A total of $5,129,903 in federal funding will go to four community health centers in Maui County.

Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center, also known as Community Clinic of Maui, was recently awarded a $126,700 Hawaiʻi Dental Service Foundation grant for new dental equipment that allows all 12 of its dental operatories to safely reopen and serve the community.

Kaiser Permanente has donated $143,000 to expand telehealth services for four safety net organizations in Hawaiʻi, including Community Clinic of Maui.

An additional $2,375,810 was secured for Community Health Centers in Maui County as part of a Third Coronavirus Relief Legislation package that Congress passed in March.

The US Department of Health and Human Services will award 14 community health centers in Hawai‘i federal funding totaling more than $28.7 million.

The Community Clinic of Maui will receive $1,350,479 in federal funds as part of a larger $4,069,396 appropriation for three community health centers in Hawaiʻi

The funding includes more than $52,000 for the Community Clinic of Maui in Wailuku; and around $42,000 each for the Hāna Community Health Center, the Lānaʻi Community Health Center and Molokaʻi ʻOhana Health Care.

The funding release includes a total of more than $280,000 in federal grants for four health centers in Maui County including the Mālama I Ke Ola Community Clinic of Maui in Wailuku, and the Hāna Community Health Center in East Mau.

The funds are made available through the federal Affordable Care Act. There are a total of 14 health centers in Hawaiʻi that provide care to an estimated 144,427 individuals, according to Health and Human Service officials.

The funds will be utilized by the hospital’s Hale Makua Health Services and Malama I Ke Ola Health Center to address the needs of the island’s aging population.

The Community Clinic of Maui is the recipient of a $4.5 million grant made possible through new legislation outlined in the Affordable Care Act.
