Monk seal pup interactions prompt fisher and boater outreach at Honokōhau on Hawaiʻi Island

Human interactions with a recently entangled monk seal pup on Hawaiʻi Island has prompted outreach to fishers and boaters. The five-month-old female Hawaiian monk seal, named Keaka (tag number T64/T65), has been a frequent visitor to Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor in recent days.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources is hosting an informational meeting on Nov. 1 to provide recovery and operational updates for Lahaina Harbor and Māla Wharf.

Construction Alert And Transaction Changes At Small Boat Harbors

Work began today to repair the boat ramp loading dock at the Kukui‘ula Small Boat Harbor on Kaua‘i. Construction crews will remove the existing, damaged wooden loading dock and replace it. The new dock will be made of an aluminum frame with plastic lumber fenders and fiberglass decking. 

Maunalua Bay Loading Dock in East O‘ahu Condemned

The DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation has closed the public loading dock at the Maunalua Bay boat ramp in east O‘ahu.

Demonstration Planned to Save Wilson Keahiʻs Boat Yard at Māla

A sign waving demonstration will be held this Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Māla Boat Yard at the site where Lahaina resident Wilson Keahi has maintained a boat yard for the past 35 years.
