The 20th Annual Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem was held May 4 and 5, 2024 at Ho’okipa Beach Park. The event, hosted by Maui surfer Ian Walsh is a nonprofit event that’s designed to hone the skills of up and coming Maui surfers, and prepare them for success on a larger scale.

The 20th Annual Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem, a free two day surf contest for Maui’s youth ages 15 years old and younger, is taking place at Hoʻokipa Beach Park all-day Saturday and Sunday.

The World Surf League 2023/2024 Big Wave season is officially open. This Big Wave season will feature events at two iconic locations: the TUDOR Jaws Big Wave Challenge at Peʻahi on Maui in the Hawaiian Islands; and the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge in Nazaré, Portugal.  The holding period to run the competition at Nazaré opens today, and Peʻahi starts on Nov. 10. Both events’ holding periods close on March 31, 2024.

The Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem Foundation has awarded 2023 scholarships to six outstanding Maui students. Each recipient was awarded a $2,500 scholarship for their college or university expenses.

Due to a scheduling conflict from the Maui County Department of Parks & Recreation, the Menehune Mayhem event permit had to be pushed back 1 weekend to May 13-14, 2023.

The Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem Foundation announced its 2022 scholarship recipients. Ten outstanding Maui students have received $2,000 scholarships for their college or university expenses.

The Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem Foundation is accepting applications from Maui county high school seniors for its five $1,000 scholarships. Applicants must be attending a college or university in 2022 to be eligible.

The world’s best big wave surfers are back on call as the holding period for the World Surf League (WSL) 2021/2022 Big Wave season officially opened today.

Premiering tonight, Monday, July 12, at 7 p.m. is Maui’s own big wave surfer, community advocate and YouTube cooking sensation Ian Walsh. A new episode will air every Monday for the next 12 weeks at 7 p.m. on Spectrum OC16.

“Seeing these other events unfolding and other things that are happening on our island and our state, these kids should be allowed to compete. I understand entirely, keeping professional events at bay, those draw large crowds…but I don’t think these kids should be punished – for lack of better words – because of the size of these professional events, because their events don’t draw the same amount of crowds,” said Walsh.

The World Surf League today announced the nominees for the 2020 Red Bull Big Wave Awards, honoring the best in big wave surfing from the past 12 months.  Maui’s Paige Alms, Billy Kemper, Kai Lenny and Ian Walsh have all been nominated in various categories.

The world’s best big wave surfers are now in transit to Pe’ahi to defy nature and challenge themselves in waves forecast to be in the 35-to-50-foot range on the face.

The opening day of the World Surf League Sunset Pro witnessed Maui native and big-wave specialist Ian Walsh easily advancing in his heat.

Also…Ian Walsh’s incredible barrel ride at the 2018 Pe’ahi Challenge earned him the Ride of the Year award, and Tube of the Year Award for the same wave.

The majority of the nominated rides come from the infamous big wave breaks of Peʻahi “Jaws” on Maui and Nazaré in Portugal.

Maui boys currently lead the WSL’s Big Wave Tour rankings, with Kai Lenny in first, Billy Kemper in second, and Ian Walsh in third.
