Recktenwald retires as Hawai’i Chief Justice
Today marks the end of Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald’s service on the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court. He is stepping down in accordance with the State of Hawaiʻi’s constitutional requirement that judges and justices retire at the age of 70.

Appeals court rules Maui mosquito release can proceed to help control avian malaria
Hawai‘i’s Intermediate Court of Appeals ruled that a project to control mosquitos to protect endangered birds on Maui can continue. The court sided with Hawai‘i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources and the American Bird Conservancy, represented by the Center for Biological Diversity of Hawaiʻi, and found that the proposed mosquito control project would have no significant harm.

Court injunction blocks commercial ocean permitting in Kāʻanapali
Environmental Court Judge Peter Cahill has ordered the Department of Land and Natural Resources not to issue or renew commercial use permits for state waters in Kāʻanapali until it can complete environmental assessments for their use or determine such permits are exempt from environmental review under Hawaiʻi law.
