All four counties face similar issues, including: liability, unfunded mandates for employee benefit packages, reducing costs through consolidation of services, and issues surrounding the transient accommodations tax or TAT.

Present House Speaker Calvin Say announced Thursday that he will no longer be a candidate for speaker for the 2013-14 legislative sessions.

Maui Rep. Kyle Yamashita introduced an employment security bill that adjusts maximum unemployment benefits and unemployment insurance contribution rates. Rep. Angus McKelvey introduced a bill seeking the establishment of a tax credit for those who hire unemployed or disabled veterans.

He joined the entire Maui delegation earlier this week in Honolulu as all nine council members attended the joint money committee hearing for the state House and Senate. “We had a very strong showing,” said Arakawa during an exclusive interview earlier this week.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa detailed some of the key legislative items saying Maui County was able to secure over $200 million in Capital Improvement Projects.
