Maui telescope used in study of hypervelocity star, found speeding across the Milky Way

A rare star in our galaxy is racing across the sky at an impressive ~1.3 million mph. With its speed and unusual trajectory, this L subdwarf could be fast enough to potentially escape the Milky Way. Located just 400 light-years away, It’s the first hypervelocity very low mass star discovered, and it’s also the nearest known hypervelocity star to Earth.

Haleakalā Telescope Completes World’s Largest Digital Sky Survey

The Pan-STARRS observatory consists of a 1.8-meter telescope equipped with a 1.4 billion pixel digital camera, located at the summit of Haleakalā on Maui.

Maui’s Pan-STARRS Telescope Finds “Strange Lonely Planet”

PSO J318.5-22 is located 80 light-years away from Earth, has a mass that is six times that of Jupiter, belongs to a collection of young stars called the Beta Pictoris moving group, and is “one of the lowest-mass free-floating objects known.”

$3M Gift Prevents Layoffs and Cuts to Pan-STARRS Program

Before receiving the donation, officials said they were looking at having to lay off a team and halt the 2-telescope system project. Now officials say, the funding will support construction plans, pay for salaries, preserve science jobs in Hawaii, and bring new knowledge to the world through the most powerful wide-field imaging system on the planet.

New Comet Found with Haleakala Pan-STARRS Telescope

The comet is expected to be visible to the naked eye in early 2013, when it will be about as far away as Mercury.

19 near Earth Asteroids Discovered with Haleakala Telescope

The asteroid discovery is the most made by a single telescope on a given night. Scientists say the record number not only shows the power of the telescope, but…
