The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed a case of neuroangiostrongyliasis, or rat lungworm disease, in an adult on the island of Kaua‘i. Rat lungworm disease is known to be endemic in all islands of the state of Hawai‘i. This individual had no history of travel to other neighbor islands, or outside the state or country.

Rat lungworm disease, which is found in Hawaiʻi, can be transmitted to humans by at least 13 species, according to new research.

The sixth individual was an adult resident of the US mainland and was traveling in West Hawai‘i when they were infected with rat lungworm disease.

The individual is a resident of East Hawai‘i and is the third person from Hawai‘i County to test positive for rat lungworm or angiostrongyliasis in 2019.
