A “malicious fire” at an HC&S field in Kahului last year led to the early harvest of sugar cane in the area, and a subsequent air permit violation. “These circumstances led to confusion about the remaining cane in field 716 and resulted in 25 acres of field 716 being burned when HC&S completed the harvest in November 2011, rather than in 2012,” said Volner.

A brush fire on Maui on Thursday afternoon consumed a quarter-acre and caused $3,000 in losses at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company before being brought under control.

Update 7:15a 6/23/10:  Some smoke still can be seen at the site of yesterday’s fire makai of the Hana Highway in Kahului. There is no threat, there are just some large logs that are smoldering at the center of the already burned area. Firefighters brought the 25 acre brush fire under full containment yesterday afternoon. [...]
