Coastal limu testing shows nutrient pollution patterns across Maui shores

The latest round of coastal limu sampling on Maui appeared to find unusually high nitrogen levels at Kahului Harbor and Pōhaku Park, also called “S-Turns,” but low wastewater indicators, according to the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, which coordinated the project. Researchers say the mixed results require further investigation to determine the nitrogen source.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises highway users to expect delays this weekend as wide loads will be transported from Kahului Harbor to a staging area near the Kahului boat ramp beginning Saturday morning, Sept. 7 through Monday morning, Sept. 9. Trucks will be transporting modular homes that will eventually be moved to Lahaina for wildfire survivors.

DLNR: Dozens of vehicles towed at Kahului Harbor during cleanup

Crews with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources finished clearing the public parking areas of Kahului Boat Harbor by removing more than five dozen vehicles, many of them abandoned. Last week, efforts to cleanup the harbor got underway with the removal of debris.

Houseless man arrested during cleanup at Kahului Boat Harbor

Officers arrested a houseless man this morning on three charges during the second day of a cleanup operation at Kahului Boat Harbor. Authorities with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources say the man resisted arrest and attempted to flee. An officer used a taser to control the suspect and to take him into custody, according to department reports.

Kahului Harbor cleanup planned on May 2-3; includes removal of vehicles on May 6

Fifty-four trucks and cars, many inoperable, will be towed from the state’s Kahului Harbor on May 6, state officials announced. A team from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, and officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement placed notices on each of the vehicles on Monday. The notices warn owners that their car or truck is parked illegally in a state boating facility, which is a violation of one or more laws under Hawai‘i Administrative Rules. During yesterday’s posting, 27 people were also advised that the state and a contractor would be cleaning up the harbor on May 2 and 3.
