Mayor Arakawa said that the restoration of services would be implemented immediately, and that he would be submitting a new budget amendment early next year, after the election had passed, to avoid any further “political agendas” and “bickering.”

Committee Chair Mike White called the services “vital”, and claims funds to maintain holiday trash pick-up and restore landfill hours are there. He has prioritized the item, and is seeking an explanation of why the services were cut.

The Maui County Council on Monday unanimously voted to override Mayor Alan Arakawa’s line-item vetoes for the fiscal year 2015 budget. The county’s $603.6 million budget is now official and will go into effect on July 1.

Currently, there are no early walk-in voting sites on the island of Lānaʻi. The only walk-in locations in the county in the past election cycle were at the Kalana O Maui Building in Wailuku, and the Mitchell Pauole Center on the Island of Molokaʻi.
