The agreement is designed to reduce the cost of school operations, saving an estimated $30 million over the life of the project.
The project is able generate enough renewable energy to power up to 7,700 Oahu homes annually.
When the expansion is complete, Kaheawa will produce a combined capacity of 51 MW, enough energy to power 20,000 Maui homes.
