Kaiser Foundation Health Plan has reached agreement with Maui Island Holdings, LLC to purchase the 6.28-acre site currently occupied by The Maui News, located adjacent to the Kaiser Permanente Wailuku Medical Office and northwest of Maui Memorial Medical Center (which is operated by Kaiser Foundation Hospitals subsidiary Maui Health).

A new nonprofit dedicated to in-depth reporting on Maui County issues is launching on the Valley Isle, with experienced local journalists at the helm.

Dozens of people, including supporters, subscribers, and employees of The Maui News showed up for an informational picket Tuesday, in support of “securing a fair contract that protects local news coverage.”

The senators report that many of those that haven’t closed “have been bought by hedge funds, subjected to relentless cost-cutting measures, and seen their newsrooms shrunk by nearly half. The current pandemic and resulting recession has only accelerated these trends.”

Workers at The Maui News bargaining their next contract face potential outsourcing of advertising work, editing stories and designing pages, according to the the Pacific Media Workers Guild.

The Maui News will instead end their printing week with a Saturday edition called the “Weekender”

Over 30 separate Maui-owned small businesses were represented at three free workshops held at the Maui County Business Resource Center in Kahului on January 3 & 9.

The Maui Weekly newspaper published its last issue on Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, and its online version is no longer accessible via the internet.

The newspaper said that it was not reducing its publishing schedule from daily to three days per week, despite a very public change to its self-description via its website. The publisher suggested the website was “hacked.”

The state will be adding 1,500 concrete modules to Keawakapu Beach on Monday in an effort to expand an artificial reef located about a half mile offshore.
