Wind Blamed for Nāpili Power Outage

Wind is being blamed for a power outage that affected an estimated 1,300 customers in the Nāpili area of West Maui. The outage resulted when high winds blew branches into power lines.

Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected on Lānaʻi, with gusts approaching 60 mph at the summit of Haleakalā on Maui today.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the Summit of Haleakala on Maui until 6 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013.

50 mph Wind Gusts Forecast at Haleakalā

A Wind Advisory was issued for the Summit area of Haleakalā today for sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts of at least 50 mph expected through 6 p.m on Saturday.

Winds will be gusting at up to 50 mph through this afternoon on Maui, with the strongest winds occurring across ridge tops and downwind of terrain.

Locations in the advisory include Maui Island, Lanai and Kahoolawe. Civil Defense authorities say winds at the summit will increase on Tuesday and may become hazardous.

The advisory includes Manele, Lanai City, Kahului, Haleakala National Park above the 6,000 foot elevation, South Point, Pahala, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Kamuela, and Waikoloa.

Strong Winds Continue in Maui County

East winds of 25 to 30 mph are expected, with localized gusts of over 45 mph. The strong and gusty trade winds are the result of a high pressure system far north of the state.

Forecasters say east winds over Haleakala will be 30 to 35 mph with localized gusts over 45 mph. The strongest winds are expected over exposed ridges.
