This post includes an ongoing list of road closures, traffic advisories and road safety conditions as part of our ongoing coverage of Tropical Storm Olivia. Please check back often. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Most Roads to Re-Open Overnight:

8:01 p.m. 9.12.18: Most closed roads were expected to reopen overnight with the exception of Lower Honoapiʻilani Road at the culvert crossing near Kaʻopala Beach. The road in that area is badly damaged from flooding and is closed until further notice.

State Transportation UPDATE:

5:20 p.m. 9.12.18: Hāna Highway and Honoapiʻilani Highway on Maui is clear. Kamehameha V Highway on Molokaʻi is passable, but water is still flowing through the fords. Please exercise caution on the roads as flash flooding is still possible.

Nuʻu Area of Piʻilani Hwy:

5:29 p.m. 9.12.18: Nuʻu Area – Piʻilani Hwy-31 at Mile Marker 30. The area is passable with 4 wheel drive only.

COUNTY UPDATED ROAD CLOSURES AS OF 4 p.m. 9.12.18

Piʻilani Highway (Mile 39) near Kaupō is closed due to rocks and debris on the road.
Waialoa and ʻUlainu Roads in Hāna – Closed
ʻĪao Valley Rd. below Kepaniwai Bridge, Mud slides – Closed
Lepo St., large tree down across lines (Haiku) – Closed
L. Honoapiʻiliani Hwy from Hoʻohui to Hui Rd. E – Closed
Honoapiʻilani hwy at Honolua – Closed
Kam V @ MP#10 and MP#8 (Molokai) – Closed
Kaumalapau Hwy (Ilima/Lanai Ave.), partial road blockage from tree. (Lanai)
Hāna Hwy MP 44 (Wailua-Kipahulu) – Closed

Maui Police Department encourages the public not to drive to West Maui via Kahekili Highway due to heavy flooding in Honokōhau Valley.

State Hwy. crews have cleared debris off the roadway and waters have subsided enough to reopen the roadway at Kamehameha V. Hwy. at MP #7 heading East.  We will continue to monitor in the event there is another deluge of rain in the mountain areas of the East end that may cause another flash flood situation onto the roadway.

Hāna Hwy Boulder Blocking Lane Mile 13 Honomanu

3:30 p.m. 9/12/18 update: Landslide and boulder blocking one lane on Hāna Highway near mile marker 13-14 (Honomanū area). Crews are responding.

Lower Honoapiʻilani Rd Flooding at Puamana Pl

3:15 p.m. 9.12.18: Lower Honoapiʻilani Rd between Puamana Pl and Hui Rd E in Kahana will remain closed until further notice due to flooding and evacuations.

Honoapiʻilani Hwy near Honolua Bay: Mile 32-34 Flooding

2:40 pm 9/12/18: Crews from the State Department of Transportation are between flood waters on Honoapiʻilani Highway between Miles 32.41 and 34.5 (near Honolua Bay). Motorists are asked to avoid the area. “If we wouldn’t cross neither should you,” said DOT officials.

2:18 p.m. 9/12: Honoapiʻilani Highway at Mile 32.41 in the area of Honolua Bridge is flooding the road. The water level was coming down at last report, but DOT officials said it serves as a good reminder not to cross flood waters. A four person crew is currently on the other side waiting for the waters to subside.

Hāna Highway near Kawai Ola Place Downed Tree

1:45 p.m. 9.12.18: Hāna Highway at mm 33.8 (near Kawai Ola Place) has been cleared, continue to use caution in the area due to flooding.

12:28 p.m. 9.12.18: Crews responding to downed tree at mile marker 28 (near Lanikele Bridge). Local traffic being allowed through at Kawai Ola Place (mm 33.8) closure, but please continue to avoid the area.

12:06 p.m. 9.12.18: Hāna Highway near Kawai Ola Place on the Kahului side of Kawaipapa is CLOSED due to a downed tree. Estimated closure is 4 hours, but could be 8 hours if MECO needs to replace a pole.

New Closures in Hāna, Makawao and on Lānaʻii

11:46 a.m. 9.12.18: Waikaloa and ʻUlainu Roads in Hāna are CLOSED;  Ehu Road in Makawao is CLOSED; and Lānaʻi’s Kaumalapau Hwy Between ʻIlima and Lānaʻi Avenues is PARTIALLY CLOSED.

Honoapiʻilani Hwy/Kapunakea Signal Out:

10:42 a.m. 9.12.18: The traffic signal at the Honoapiʻilani Highway and Kapunakea Street intersection is reportedly out. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and treat the intersection as a four-way stop until it is fixed.

Utility Work on Hāna Hwy at Hansen Rd

9:56 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: Maui Electric Co crews are working on an unstable utility pole on Hāna Highway near Hansen Road. The right lane in the Hāna bound direction is closed.

ʻĪao Valley Rd Below Kepaniwai Bridge CLOSED

9:15 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: ʻĪao Valley Road below Kepaniwai Bridge is CLOSED.  Heavy, sustained rains were reported overnight.  The river gauge at Kepaniwai reached 7.85 ft at 1:45 a.m. and was in the 6-7 foot range since 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday.  County officials say they are also dealing with landslides at the location.

Traffic Light Outages:

9:20 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: Some traffic lights are reported to be blinking. Transportation officials advise that if traffic signals are out drivers should treat intersections as an all way stop. Drive with caution, especially on wet roads.

Hāna Hwy, Downed Tree Mile 26

9:49 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: State transportation crews have cleared the two fallen trees on Hāna Hwy at mile markers 21 and 26. Wind and rain continues and small debris may fall on the roadway. People should continue to avoid Hāna Hwy.

7:54 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: Kahului bound lane of Hāna Hwy at mile marker 26 is blocked due to a downed tree. Crews are responding.

Hāna Highway Downed Tree Mile 21

9:49 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: State transportation crews have cleared the two fallen trees on Hāna Hwy at mile markers 21 and 26. Wind and rain continues and small debris may fall on the roadway. People should continue to avoid Hāna Hwy.

7:11 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: Hāna Hwy near mile marker 21 is blocked in both directions due to a fallen tree. Crews from the state of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation are responding.  Avoid the roadway.

Hāna Highway Landslide Mile 14

7:08 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: HDOT crews have cleared Hāna Hwy at mile marker 14 near Honomanū. The road is open but people should avoid the area.

6:43 a.m. HST, 9.12.18: Hāna Hwy at mile marker 14 near Honomanū is closed in both directions due a landslide. Crews from the state of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation are responding.

Hāna Hwy Pre-Staging Underway:

10:12 a.m. HST 9.11.18: As the Tropical Storm Warning continues for Maui County, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is preparing for potential impacts to state routes on Maui and is focusing on pre-staging plans for Hāna Highway (Route 360) in East Maui.

The HDOT responded to over a dozen landslide and tree fall events on Hāna Highway between Aug. 23 and 28, 2018, and urges those unfamiliar with the route to avoid the area.

A variable message sign will be posted in the Twin Falls area (approximately Mile 2) to warn motorists of the potential for landslides. The sign may be removed if it cannot be anchored to avoid causing potential threats during high winds.

Other actions HDOT Highways Division is taking to prepare Hāna Highway for the potential effects of Tropical Storm Olivia are:

• Checking and clearing drainage inlets, catch basins and culverts.
• Pre-staging a loader and other equipment at Mile 6.
• Coordinating with private contractors with equipment currently staged in Hāna and Central Maui to mobilize their equipment as necessary to clear the highway.
• Putting crews on standby this afternoon and using Keʻanae Crew members living in Hāna and Keʻanae for possible response.
• Arranging for a landscape contractor to be on standby for potential tree and branch removal.

HDOT continues to coordinate with Federal, State, and County officials in preparation for Tropical Storm Olivia.

Hansen Road: OPEN

6:27 p.m., 9.11.18: This accident was not storm related. Hansen Rd has since reopened. A 16-year-old girl from Makawao, sustained life threatening injuries in a motor vehicle crash reported at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 on Hansen Road just north of Pūlehu Road in Kahului/Puʻunēnē, police said.  Full story at the following direct LINK.

1:30 p.m., 9.11.18: Hansen Road is closed between Hāna Highway and Pūlehu Road until further notice due to a motor vehicle accident.

1:24 p.m., 9.11.18: Hansen Road is closed in both directions between Hāna Highway and Maui Veterans (Mokulele) Highway due to a motor vehicle collision. The intersection of Hansen and Pūlehu Roads is also closed. Motorists should use an alternate route until further notice.
